Paradigm Ascension
The Second Prestige Layer - Remnants: Post-Collapse Idle Survival
What is Paradigm Ascension?
Paradigm Ascension is the second prestige layer in REMNANTS, sitting one level above Echo Reset. Where an Echo Reset returns a single run to Year Zero, ascending resets the entire prestige cycle - your Echo Fragments, every Echo Forge purchase, your Run Traits, Specialists, Blueprints, Faction alliances, and the run counter itself.
In exchange you earn Paradigms - MERIDIAN's design language, turned to your own ends. Paradigms power two things: a lifetime Ascension Level passive that finally breaks the Echo bonus ceiling, and The Lattice, a five-branch skill tree that rewrites the rules of every future cycle.
Unlock & Cadence
- First ascension unlocks after you've completed Echo Run 15 (fifteen Echo Resets). The Ascension panel appears in the nav once you're eligible.
- After the first, ascension becomes flexible: you can ascend again any time you've completed at least one Echo Reset in the new cycle. There's no fixed run requirement after the first - the only gate is that you need something built up to convert.
- Ascending plays a full ceremony: an interface glitch, the Lattice constellation blooming into light, a white-out, and a fresh cycle.

Earning Paradigms
Paradigms are awarded on ascension from how much your cycle accomplished, on a deliberately sublinear curve so a single monster cycle can't hand you the whole tree:
- Fragment conversion:
floor(√cycleFragments × 0.25). Because it's a square root, doubling your fragments does not double your Paradigms - it rewards depth without running away. (2,000 cycle fragments → 11 Paradigms; 8,000 → 22.) - Run bonus: +1 Paradigm per 5 Echo Resets completed in the cycle.
- First-ascension bonus: a one-time +3 for breaking the cycle the first time.
A typical first ascension at run 15 lands around the entry ring of the tree (~17 Paradigms) - enough to commit to one or two branches, not to light up the constellation.
Ascension Level (the Passive)
Your Ascension Level is your lifetime Paradigm total. It never decreases, and it grants:
- +20% to all production per level, uncapped (
×(1 + 0.20 × level)). With the Defiance capstone this rises to +30%/level. - This is the layer that finally breaks the 1,000% Echo bonus ceiling - your production multiplier is no longer bounded by how many fragments you can stack in one cycle.
Because it scales with lifetime Paradigms rather than spendable ones, spending Paradigms in The Lattice does not lower your passive - you keep the full Ascension Level forever.
The Lattice
Spendable Paradigms buy into The Lattice - a five-branch constellation of 20 nodes radiating from a central root. Each branch is a linear chain: you must own the shallower node before the deeper one unlocks. Costs climb with depth (a full clear runs ~197 Paradigms).

Paradigm Retrofit Ladders
Buying Retrofit Doctrine (Industry depth 2) unlocks new upgrade tiers across your production buildings - the Paradigm Retrofit ladders. These behave like ordinary building upgrades but gate behind deep ownership counts, rewarding you for stacking a single line:
- Production buildings: tiers at 20 / 40 / 70 / 110 / 160 owned - Paradigm Retrofit, Schema Rewrite, Design Transcendence, Axiomatic Form, and The Final Pattern (×2 output each, ×3 at the top tier → ×48 stacked).
- Housing: capacity ladders at 40 / 90 / 150 owned (×1.5 capacity each).
Why Founding Gets Harder
Ascension rewards are powerful enough that, left unchecked, they'd trivialise city founding in the new cycle. To keep the climb meaningful, the shelter / city-founding gates self-balance:
- Founding requirements scale with both your prestige depth and your Ascension Level - roughly
(1 + 0.2 × prestigeRuns) × ascMult^0.8- absorbing about 80% of the raw production reward. - The net effect: deeper cycles and higher Ascension Levels make each new founding a genuine climb rather than a formality, while still leaving you meaningfully ahead.
- The Defiance node The Architect's Hand (−25% requirements) is the direct counter if you want founding to feel quicker again.
First-Ascension Strategy
- Push the cycle before you ascend. Because Paradigms scale with cycle fragments and runs, a few extra deep Echo Resets past run 15 are worth far more than ascending the moment it unlocks.
- Open with Automation + Genesis. Batch Fabrication (×100 buy) and Remembered Foundations / Inherited Crew are cheap and immediately compress every future early game.
- Then commit to Echo Mastery. Resonant Memory → Fragment Synthesis → Unbound Resonance turns each post-ascension cycle into a fragment engine, which feeds your next ascension.
- Bank toward Defiance depth 4. MERIDIAN's Heir (+30%/level passive and +25% Paradigms) is the long-term compounding payoff - the single most valuable node once you can afford its 30-Paradigm cost.
